Hints: It is something you already do, but probably not enough. It is a main component of all well-delivered speeches. It is based on grammar, but is not taught in grammar lessons. It can be done as effectively by people with speech challenges as those with perfect pronunciation. It is an important part of talking that is not talking. It is… Wait for it… Wait for it…(This is also a hint)... Welcome! Let’s answer some of your questions, and help you find out what accent modification at Speech of Choice is all about.
What is accent modification really? There are many descriptions of accent modification out there, but let me give you a simple one. Accent modification as practiced by Speech of Choice is training in pronunciation of General American English. What does accent modification at Speech of Choice include? It includes specialized, personalized training in… Pronunciation of individual speech sounds, Use of “prosody” or the “melody” of speech, Tips to use your voice to best effect, AND, Strategies to increase intelligibility in general in any language. Is it really possible to change an accent? Well, it depends. If you started learning English as a teenager or adult and you want to sound exactly like a native speaker in conversational speech, then the realistic answer is no. However… If you want to increase your precision and effectiveness in speaking American English to a level where people usually understand you, and your listeners focus more on your message than your accent, the answer is yes - definitely yes. If you want to be able to pronounce scripted speech you can practice - like an actor’s script or a prepared speech - in a General American English accent, then yes to this too. The reason is… Accent modification IS NOT about speaking in a way where you’re acting like someone you’re not (unless you are an actor and that is exactly what you want to do for your job). Accent modification IS about increasing your skill level so you can most effectively convey your ideas, your messages, and your personality, verbally in American English. How do I know if it’s right for me? Clients at Speech of Choice may have many reasons for choosing this training. You may relate to some of these.
